New York City FC sign Nicolás Acevedo - "A great pride for me"
New York City FC have signed Nicolás Acevedo from Liverpool FC Montevideo, the club announced on Monday. The 20-year-old Uruguayan is signed on a permanent transfer, using Allocation Money.
“Being an NYCFC player is a great pride for me, my family and my friends,” Acevedo said. “The truth is that going to a Club so big makes me excited and it’s an important step in my professional career. When I heard about this opportunity, I didn’t doubt it. I was so excited and eager to sign.”
“Nicolás is a very good addition to our midfield and adds competition and depth across the position group,” NYCFC head coach Ronny Deila said. “He’s an excellent player technically and loves to win the ball back which is key in how we want to play our football.”
Nicolás Acevedo signed his first professional contract with Liverpool FC Montevideo in July 2018. The 20-year-old was named captain of his team for the 2019 season. He made 36 appearances, recording two assists. Acevedo made five appearances (two starts) with the Uruguayan U-23 national team during the 2020 Conmebol Pre-Olympic Tournament. He also played 17 games with Uruguay's U-20 national team, scoring two goals.
Due to his stellar performances in the league and with the national team, Nicolás Acevedo saw his market value grow from $990,000 to $1,98 million in January, making the third most valuable player of the Uruguayan Primera División.
