Championship market values: Ndiaye among biggest winners - Top scorer Akpom on the up
In an intermediary update in the Championship, Transfermarkt has adjusted the market values of 138 footballers. The biggest winners are a number of players in the ranks of the two teams at the top of the table. Among others, Josh Brownhill and Nathan Tella of league leaders Burnley, as well as Iliman Ndiaye and Anel Ahmedhodzic of second-placed Sheffield United gain several millions.
Sitting comfortably at the top of the table with a 16-point advantage on third-placed Middlesbrough, Burnley are set to return to the Premier League after just one season. One of the best midfielders in the English second tier this season, Brownhill has scored six goals and provided seven assists in 34 games so far and increases his market value by €6 million to €15m. The 27-year-old's teammate Tella, who arrived on loan from Southampton last summer, has been used in a number of different positions in attack and is the teams top scorer with 17 goals in the league. The 23-year-old rises from €4.5m to €12m.
The most valuable Championship players after the 2022/23 season
At Sheffield United, defender Ahmedhodzic, who was signed for a fee of €4.5m from Malmö FF last July, continues to impress in defence and rises by another €6m to €16m, making him the most valuable centre-back in the league after the update. The 23-year-old has played himself into the spotlight and bigger clubs from the European top leagues are reportedly following his development closely. Teammate Ndiaye, who represented Senegal at the World Cup, already doubled his market value in December and now makes another big jump of €7m to €15m following 18 goal contributions in 37 Championship appearances.
Championship market values: Akpom on the up, Pedro most valuable
Further winners at the two top clubs include Sander Berge (+€2m to €18m) at Sheffield United and Burnley's Jordan Beyer, who impressed alongside Taylor Harwood-Bellis (+€2m to €15m) in defence and rises by €6m to €10m. The Clarets are said to have a €15m option to buy the Borussia Mönchegladbach centre-back in the summer.
The Championship's top scorer, Chuba Akpom, already found the back of the net 24 times in the league and improves his market value to a career high of €7m. The 27-year-old former Arsenal player is fighting for promotion to the Premier League with Middlesbrough and one of the main reasons, Boro currently occupy third place. With 18 goals in 38 matches, Coventry striker Viktor Gyökeres follows behind Akpom in the scoring charts and rises from €5m to €8m.

The 21-year-old Brazilian receives a plus of €4m and is now worth €24m, surpassing teammate Ismaïla Sarr (-€2m to €20m) at the top of the market value rankings. Further notable players upgraded in course of the intermediary update are Sunderland's Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo (+€6m to €13m), who finally made his breakthrough, Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott (+€7m to €13m) and Birmingham City centre-back Auston Trusty (+€6m to €9m), who will return to Arsenal in the summer.
Championship downgrades: Aarons and Pukki among market value losers
Among the downgraded players are Max Aarons (-€2m to €16m) of Norwich, who struggle with consistency this season and sit three points behind the playoff spots, teammate Teemu Pukki (-€0.5m to €2.5m) and Wesley Hoedt (-€1.5m to €2m). The latter joined Watford from RSC Anderlecht on deadline day and drops to the level of the fee paid for him.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
