Steady hand or holding the club back? Analysing David Moyes' record at West Ham

West Ham news: What is David Moyes' record at West Ham?

David Moyes and West Ham go into Saturday’s clash with Nottingham Forest knowing that they desperately need a win. Although the London club still sit eighth in the Premier League table, the Hammers have picked up just three points from their last five games. And following last weekend’s 6-0 defeat to Arsenal, reports suggested that the club could now be thinking twice about offering Moyes a new contract extension at the end of the season.

The 60-year-old tactician has been West Ham manager since December 2019 and in that time Moyes has guided the club to 16th, 6th, 7th and 14th finishes in the English top-flight, as well as winning last season’s UEFA Europa Conference League. Which happened to be West Ham’s first major trophy since 1980 and their first European trophy in 58 years. And in more ways than one, Moyes has established himself as perhaps the club’s most successful manager in its modern era.

Moyes’ record as West Ham manager

To date, Moyes has coached over 210 games in this stint as West Ham manager and has bagged an impressive 1.57 points per game in all competitions. That figure puts the Scot ahead of the last four full-time managers at the club, with Sam Allardyce coming close with 1.43 points per game. In fact, when we include that list to all West Ham managers since 2003 and look at which ones have performed the best in the Premier League, Moyes also comes out on top with an average of 1.38 points per game - higher than the seven full-time managers that came before him and further proof that he has taken West Ham to new heights in the Premier League.

West Ham managers

When we then take a look at Moyes’ performances across the entire division we can also get an accurate view of how he has fared at West Ham. For example, when we tally up the best points per game average of all full-time managers (who have coached more than 50 league games) in the division since Moyes took over at West Ham, we find that the 60-year-old coach comes in 12th among his peers. At first, that may not seem all that impressive, but when we consider that at least nine of the 11 coaches above him worked at clubs either pushing or finishing in the top four, it underlines the fact that Moyes has established West Ham as a club capable of finishing in the top half of the table, albeit it just below the bigger clubs in the league.

West Ham spending

This is made even clearer when we consider the money involved in the English top-flight over the course of the last four years. Since Moyes took over at West Ham, the club’s net spend on transfers currently stands at €273 million. And while that may seem like a lot by general European standards, it’s actually only the eighth highest in the Premier League. Which, again, suggests that Moyes may be achieving exactly what is being asked of him, if the club’s transfer budget is anything to go by.
